5 October - 20 October 2013
In the second part of the programme on 4th October, 2013 a group of 14 students with 1 teacher, Ms. Neeru Bhasin left for La Tour du Pin, a beautiful town in South of France.
We were greeted by our French partners and their families on arrival at the airport. After a warm welcome all of us left for our new ‘homes’ for the next 12 days.
All of us were a little skeptical because the French way of living, food and the family life was so different. Yet, when we all met in the school called Lycee Elie Cartan after the weekend to exchange our experiences, all of us were surprised because our French host families had been so understanding and had made many changes in their lifestyle to make us feel ‘at home’. Sneha Parmar’s host Mom had taken a 15 day off from work to spend time with her!
During our stay we were engaged in various interesting activities like learning how to make breads (at a local bakery), sewing (in a ‘factory’), indoor rock climbing, step exercising.
The students also attended classes with their French partners in subjects like English, French, Physics and Art.
A trekking expedition was also organized where we all experienced walking through some ancient stalactite and stalagmite caves.
We all also played a badminton match organized in the school’s gymnasium.
We visited a few neighbouring towns like Annecy, Bourgoin Jallieu, Grenoble and Lyon, not to forget the magnificient Mont Blanc in the Alps. The school had also arranged for us to see a live Basketball match between two French teams, Asvel and Strasbourg. A cultural evening was organized, where to give the French a taste of Indian culture, we presented an evening of dance and music and the host families laid out a table of some wonderful French cuisine. Our programme was so liked by the Principal that he requested us to present the show for the whole school the next day.
The Mayor of the Department of Isere invited us for an interactive session in the Town Hall where we exchanged information about the civic amenities and the civic bodies of both our cities.
The local daily, La Dauphin published full page news on our visit and our stay, with interviews of the students.
The trip, of course, wouldn’t have been complete without a visit to Paris, the city of love.
Our stay in Paris included visits to the Eiffel Tower. Once up to the top level from where the world around looked so beautiful, one did not feel like coming down. The boat cruise on river Sienne will always live in our memories! A walk down the Champs Elysees from the Arc de Triomphe was a wonderful experience!
The trip to the Sacre Coeur and walking in the streets around it took us back to the time when the famous painters would often sit there and produce masterpieces.
We all brought back the famous Mona Lisa smile with us from the Louvre!
Last, but not the least, the Disneyland-a trip for which an entire day was not enough. Once inside it was as if a fairy had swished her magical wand on us and we were swept off our feet and taken into the mesmerizing, beautiful fairy land!!!
Alas, like all good things come to an end our trip too, came to an end when we took a flight back to New Delhi on the 20th October, 2013.
We have all made some life-long friends and we are now a part of each other’s life. We have all learnt a lot of good things from the exchange programme- to appreciate each other’s culture being the most prominent one. This exchange has definitely made us better global citizens.
