We had the wonderful opportunity to attend a Workshop on Slam Poetry by renowned International slam poets Mr. Ikenna Onyegbula (who is a Four time Ottawa Poetry Slam Finalist) and Mr Kyle Louw (who is also a slam champion with three titles under his belt). Slam poetry is also known as ‘Spoken word poetry’ owing to its simplicity. The objective of the workshop was to introduce young people to skills they can use both to express themselves through poetry and to deepen their understanding and appreciation of poems written by others. Mr. Onyegbula and Mr Louw emphasized upon the various aspects of their poems, including word choice, sound correspondences and rhythm. They involved the students in various activities to help them focus on their own thought processes to write better poetry. The goal of the exercises was to help the participants get a sense of the ways that writers use language to create poems and to have participants think about poetry beyond simple rhyming verses. The bottom-line was that real poetry is personal— where one is emphatic towards others and can express oneself without restrictions. In addition to all this, the students had the opportunity to interact, discuss and analyze poetry, by exploring the techniques used by poets. During the day-long workshop, students enjoyed and explored numerous creative strategies of writing slam poetry. All in all, it was a noteworthy experience for the students and teachers alike.
